New Hampshire State Representative James A. Spillane recently introduced legislation that would allow youth turkey hunters to use a .410 gauge shotgun during the New Hampshire youth turkey hunt weekend. House Bill 1108 was referred to the House Committee on Fish and Game and Marine Resources where it has a hearing scheduled on Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 1 p.m. in the Legislative Office Building Room 307.

Due to rapidly advancing ammunition technology, it is now possible to effectively hunt wild turkey with a .410 gauge shotgun. The benefit of a .410 shotgun is that it has much less recoil than a 12 or 20 gauge shotgun, but still is a lethal choice. Additionally, the .410 is a popular choice among youth hunters.
“The Sportsmen’s Alliance applauds Representative Spillane for taking the lead on legislation that makes hunting sports more enjoyable and accessible for the next generation,” said Jacob Hupp associate director of state services at the Sportsmen’s Alliance. “It is this kind of well thought out inclusive legislation that drives youth participation that will in turn help secure the future of outdoor shooting sports in The Granite State for years to come.”
